Moving rocks – The struggle against the sluggish rock
Moving heavy granite is a major problem in quarrying. For »small« movements, such as turning blocks to set the wedge holes, rack jacks or connected carts were used. Since ca. 1900, cranes and trolleys running on tracks were set up in the quarries to facilitate the transport of blocks from the quarry face for further processing in the stoneworking and paving huts.
